WFU Brain Awareness Council - Faculty Involvement
|
Contact the Brain Awareness Council at bac@wfu.edu. Are you a faculty member who'd like to show their support of the Brain Awareness Council by getting involved? Here are several ways you can get involved in this exciting opportunity: • Attend Brain Awareness Week Seminars: Each Spring, we host a week-long set of programming that offers community members of a variety of age groups to learn more about brains. Some of these seminars are specifically for scientists and graduate students. If you'd like to be added to our list serv to receive periodic reminders of the activities and seminars we offer, please email your name, department, and email address to our Website Chair Walter Wiggins at wwiggins@wfubmc.edu. • Encourage Graduate Student Participation: Each school visit requires roughly 1-2 hours each month of a graduate students' time. Additionally, we host one meeting each semester so our members can stay up on the literature and techniques that we use to present brain activities in the community. This is a minimal time commitment that has HUGE benefits for your graduate students. They get practice in teaching science concepts, presenting brain-related information, communicating with a local biotech company (Targacept), and are instilled with the value of giving back to the community. • Donate Brains to the Brain Awareness Council: We are always looking for new human and animal specimen, as the monthly transport and viewing of the brains takes a toll on the brains we have. Although, we are always very careful to protect the brains, some wear and tear is inevitable. We abide by all University policies and EH&S policies on brain handling and have undergone extensive training on the safe handling of brains. Please email our Materials Management Chair Katie Martucci at kmartucc@wfubmc.edu if you re interested in donating a human or animal specimen. • Donate Your Time to the Brain Awareness Council: Although many of our school visits are manned by graduate students, some faculty members occasionally find time to accompany us on our school visits in the community. These visits are HUGELY rewarding for both the participating school-children and graduate students. The school-children gain the experience of meeting a "real" scientist and the graduate students learn about new presentation styles and gain more interaction with faculty members. Please email our Volunteer Chair Elizabeth Burnette at eburnett@wfubmc.edu if you are interested in volunteering at a school visit. • Donate Supplies to the Brain Awareness Council: Our school visit presentations require the use of supplies that must be purchased from a limited budget provided by the Graduate School. Some supplies that are always in great need: latex and non-latex gloves, pipe cleaners (for our Build-a-Neuron Station), brain charts & diagrams, brain models, and any other brain presentation materials you may want to share. Please email our Materials Management Chair Katie Martucci at kmartucc@wfubmc.edu if you re interested in donating supplies to the Brain Awareness Council. • Share Your Ideas with the Brain Awareness Council: If you have ideas for new school presentations, seminar topics or Brain Awareness Week activities, please let us know. Also, if you know of a school or local business that may be interested in collaborating with our organization, we'd love to hear from you. Please email your ideas to our Secretary Carson Dobrin at cdobrin@wfubmc.edu. |
