On Jan 24, 2020, three Interpreting & Translation Studies (ITS) graduate students (Tong Wu, Yuzhu Zhang, and Hongyu Lu) traveled to Columbia, South Carolina to interpret for Professor  Lyu, a renowned Opera artist from Beijing, film director and professor of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Art.

Starting to learn Beijing opera and martial arts at 10 years old, Mr. Suosen Lyu later became nationally famous as a Beijing Opera WuSheng (Acrobatic Male Lead). He is a guest professor at several universities in China and has performed in a number of countries. Mr. Lyu’s visit to South Carolina was jointly sponsored and hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of South Carolina, the Chinese Association of Columbia, and East Point Academy.

ITS volunteers interpreted for Mr. Lyu’s presentation and his opera demonstration for East Point Academy students. The high-quality interpreting services provided by ITS students were well received by the audience and highly commended by Mr. Lyu and the event organizers.

Dr. Chaowei Zhu was also invited to attend this event and he reiterated the Graduate School’s long-standing commitment to support local communities and cultural exchange programs in the Carolinas.
